Abstract
Palm oil accounts for a significant portion of edible oil consumption in India. However, most of the palm oil in India is imported from South-East Asia. Palm oil production has been associated with various negative environmental, social and biodiversity impacts due to unsustainable production practices. Given that India is the biggest importer of palm oil in the world, it has a pivotal role to play in influencing the industry to move away from unsustainable practices and ensuring the long-term future of the industry and environment. However, the demand in India for responsibly produced palm oil has been fairly tepid till recently. Voluntary sustainability and governance standards will have an increasingly important part to play in India in facilitating the transition to sustainable palm oil, for imports as well as domestic production.
