Abstract
This chapter problematizes gender roles and cisnormative education settings. It explores how hetereosexist environments cause harm to young transgender students. Statistics from GLSEN’s School Climate Survey are discussed. The chapter cites the deficits in teacher training and curricula, and provides suggestions for incorporation of trans-friendly curricular themes. Studies focusing on the social interactions of trans children are explored. The chapter concludes with a discussion of gender performativity and the vital need to use appropriate pronouns when interacting with trans youth.
