Abstract
The conclusion offers an overview of the central argument, as well as the domestic and imperial contexts in which the Society operated. While born out of the volunteer movement, the SOSBW demonstrated great ingenuity and adaptability, essential to navigating the turbulent years between 1919 and 1964. While its mandate changed from migrating domestic servants to creating a system for labour exchange, the women who made up the SOSBW wanted to make a positive difference by responding to the needs of the empire, but also by helping to facilitate the professionalisation of women’s work at home and abroad. In the end, and in spite of the statistical realities, the SOSBW saw its work as progressive, essential, and modern.
