Dr. Litvan is the Tasch Endowed Chair of Parkinson Disease Research at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), Professor of Neurosciences and Director of the UCSD Parkinson and Other Movement Disorder Center of Excellence. She earned her MD degree in Uruguay and completed Neurological and Neuropsychological training in Barcelona, Spain and a Neurology Residency at Georgetown, DC. She spent nine years at the National Institutes of Health, was visiting fellow at the Experimental Therapeutic Branch and Senior Staff fellow at the Neuroepidemiology Branch, and Human Motor Control Section. She was elected fellow at the American Neurological Association and is an American Academy of Neurology (AAN) fellow. Currently, she is the Chair of the International Parkinson Movement Disorder Society (IP-MDS) Continuous Medical Education Committee, World Federation of Neurology Dementia section secretary, and AAN Movement Disorder Section past Chair. She is member of multiple layman advisory boards and scientific committees. Dr. Litvan has led multiple multicenter studies and international Task Forces to develop clinical and neuropathologic diagnostic criteria for all parkinsonian and non-Alzheimer dementia neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Litvan published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles and is senior coeditor of 4 books. She was co-Editor of Moving Along and is Chief Editor of Frontiers in Neurology. She built an Interdisciplinary Movement Disorder Center at the University of Louisville and another at UCSD. Both were designated National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence. The UCSD Center was also designated Research Center of Excellence in Lewy Body Dementia and CurePSP Center of Care. She has mentored several US and international fellows who have become leaders in their own countries.
