Abstract
A Chinese-speaking, middle-aged male patient shows up in my outpatient office, frustrated, and yet relieved to see me, as I am like him, also Chinese. The man started the encounter by complaining about the care provided by the “lao wai” doctors, which means foreign doctors. His history was quite complex, but not quite so complex as his challenges that he and his care team faced in working to communicate and come to terms with the source of his symptoms.
