Psychosomatic Medicine in Poland

Abstract

The author discusses the specificity and tradition of Polish traditional medicine and its psychosomatic methods of influence. Exorcisms are discussed as a healing activity, practiced both by clerics and quacks. The author discusses the tradition of hydrotherapy in Poland. The author addresses specific features of Poland as a place where cultural influences from the West intersect with the Euro-Asian cultural influences from the East. The directions in which the Western medicine spread in Poland and connections between the Polish and Russian medicine are discussed. The author discusses in detail the implantation of the idea of psychosomatic medicine in Poland and how its development depended on the turbulent history of Poland in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The regression of psychosomatics in the 1940s and 1950s during the period of Stalinist terror and political indoctrination is discussed as well as the resurgence of psychosomatics after the fall of Stalinism. The author discusses the further history of the development of psychosomatics in the institutional framework and presents its most important representatives.
