Abstract
Other significant petrochemical process developments occurred during the time SD was making important inventions. These include UOP Platforming, Monsanto’s carbonylation process for acetic acid, acrylonitrile from propylene, Shell Chemical’s SHOP process for alpha olefins and linear alcohols, vinyl acetate from ethylene, and ethylene oxychlorination. Established engineering companies were not targeting the development of new, complex technologies, because they did not have experienced researchers and did not want to compete with their industry client base.
