Abstract
Ralph Landau and Harry Rehnberg work together at Oak Ridge, become friends and decide to start a research and development company after the war. Scientific Design Company (SD) is formed in 1946. A third partner, Bob Egbert, also with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT joins SD. A few engineers and chemists are hired and research is started immediately in a small laboratory. Some engineering work is secured to keep the firm going. Information gained from post-war inspection reports on the German chemical industry helps the new firm in accumulating chemical knowhow.
