Abstract

The chapter outlines the legislation and attitudes to self-inflicted deaths with a focus on local reactions and events before the criminal trials. It seeks to present the panorama of legal and popular opinions on the gravity of suicides and the reactions they provoked. As felonies, suicides were to be reported to the secular judicial officials, who would investigate the case and determine a proper punishment to be inflicted upon the corpse. The mainstream religious and cultural understandings of the sinfulness and heinousness of suicide manifested themselves in the most common reactions—avoidance, shunning and fear. However, taboos on touching and burying suicides might be breached; compliance and agreement with the harsh official attitudes was variable.
