Abstract

The Introduction outlines the topic and key issues explored in this book: how suicides were received, treated and investigated at the local and the first judicial level, the lower courts, in seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Sweden. The topic is set within the context of earlier research on early modern suicides and the judicial revolution and the Swedish Kingdom during its Great Power Era (ca. 1611–1721). The Introduction also presents the source material and its scope. Taking a ‘bottom-up’ or ‘from below’ approach, the book chronicles the treatment of crimes in practice, emphasizing the significance of local participation and negotiation and the selectivity in the responses and views on suicide.
