Abstract

If one wonders about what is common amongst all things, perhaps the best answer would be that they all are made up of atoms. It is noteworthy realization that different arrangement of atoms lead to such different set of properties, behavior and character that no two living beings are alike! This thinking may further be applied to man-made and naturally occurring materials and structures. Fundamentally, by arranging atoms in various forms and configurations, one may create marvels of technology. Therefore, it is indispensable to understand how atoms interact with each other and how this arrangement affects the nanoscale properties.

Problems

4.1 If two identical atoms have an energy level at \(-10\) eV, and after bonding, the molecule has energy levels at \(-5\) and \(-15\) eV, which of the two levels belong to the bonding and the anti-bonding orbitals? Explain your answer.

4.2 Look up the de Broglie wavelength of electrons in a metal of your choice.

4.3 Look up the de Broglie wavelength of electrons in a semiconductor of your choice.

4.4 Look up the de Broglie wavelength of electrons in an insulator of your choice.

4.5 Pick a 1D nanomaterial and identify its primitive unit cell.

4.6 Pick a 2D nanomaterial and identify its primitive unit cell.

4.7 Pick a 3D material and identify its primitive unit cell.

Research Assignment

R4.1 Nanotechnology is impacting aerospace technology immensely. Consider lightweight materials, jet engines, composites, radiation sensors, radiation hardened electronics, etc. Pick a topic of your choice about how nanotechnology is impacting aerospace technology, and write a one-page summary.
