Abstract

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common type of skin lymphoma and is the prototype of epidermotropic disorders. The neoplastic lymphocytes of classic MF demonstrate tropism for the epidermis and characteristically exhibit atypical cytologic features with hyperchromatic, cerebriform nuclei. The intraepidermal lymphocytes are arranged as single cells and/or in aggregates (Pautrier microabscesses). Epidermotropism is present in both patch and plaque stages but may be absent in tumor-stage MF. Epidermotropism may also be absent in biopsies of treated lesions of MF, which could lead to misdiagnosis particularly in early-stage disease.
