Abstract

This chapter discusses the development of Swedish nursing research from an academic leadership perspective. It is claimed that academic leadership is different from other leadership types because of such values as academic freedom. This may be true. There may also be a difference between academic leadership and leading a research group, which does the research and fosters the next generation of researchers, doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers. This chapter discusses the leadership of the first generation of professors, who paved the way for the second and perhaps also exerted influence over the third and fourth generations of nurse researchers. The provision of a learning environment for the doctoral students will be described from a leadership perspective as well as that of the students entering into it. The first generation of professors would not have been as successful if there had not been additional external factors driving development. The Vårdal Foundation was established in 1994 with the aim of contributing to the development of Swedish healthcare and allergy research. Its mission was to fund research relevant to care in a broader sense but it became an important platform for nursing research. This inspired other funding bodies to review their research agendas and take steps to include nursing research.
