Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the development of nursing education in Sweden and its leadership from the earliest days when matrons enforced strict discipline through the transition to the current multi-faceted academic leadership. Nursing education in Sweden has developed in close association with concurrent societal developments. Society’s changing demands led to a series of reforms and directives which transformed nursing education from a purely practical discipline into a modern academic discipline with strong ties to clinical practice. The practice part of the education is still carried out by the county councils or the municipalities within healthcare settings.

The academic leadership in nursing education today represents a dynamic integration of values in order to achieve three goals: a good working environment for teachers and students, continuous academic professional development through research and the strengthening of academic-clinical partnerships. From a historical perspective, many strong leaders, formal and informal, moved the development of nursing science forward through transformational leadership. The future development of nursing science continues to present a multitude of challenges at all levels. It is, therefore, necessary to have strong leaders, prepared for transformational leadership and equipped with the necessary competencies and skills to take on future challenges and continue the development of nursing science.
