Abstract
In this chapter, the development of nursing education research in Norway is outlined and discussed. The first part is a historical overview of the development of nursing education research divided into three time periods. Pioneers in nursing education research covers the mid-1930s to the end of the 1970s. During this period, nurses could study at The Continuing School for Nurses established by the Norwegian Nurses Organization (NNO). Master education in nursing covers the period from the end of the 1970s to the mid-1990s. Higher nursing education was established at three universities during this time. Doctoral education in nursing covers the period from the mid-1990s until today. Doctoral programmes relevant to nurses were established at the universities and the larger university colleges in the country. The last part of the chapter discusses factors that have supported or hindered the development of nursing education research in Norway. We conclude that nursing education research is lagging. There is a need for a concordant effort to bring it forward. The importance of leadership aimed at fostering nursing education research within the institutions that offer nursing education today is highlighted.

Notes
- 1.
The Education and Authorization of Nurses’ Act from 1948 was already changed in 1960 (effective from 1962), increasing the schools’ autonomy. Readjustments occurred again in 1967 and in 1975, increasing theoretical content and slowly changing the status of the nursing pupils to students.
- 2.
This was before the establishment of doctoral education for nurses in Norway. These nurses studied for their PhDs in the United States or in Sweden or in other scientific fields (e.g. pedagogy, sociology, history).
