Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the development and status of nursing science in Norway and to identify and analyse important factors and forces that have impacted that development. This chapter will look at structures and strategies used by key actors to promote the development of nursing science in Norway and facilitate understanding of these in light of important contextual and societal trends. The author has been part of this development for the last 30 years, so the account will obviously be coloured by her experiences and the positions and contexts within which she has worked. The chapter, therefore, is not an ‘objective’ account, although the author has tried to provide an account that gives a reasonable—though quite overarching and general—picture of the developments based on available sources. In the chapter, some key persons who have been essential for the development of nursing science are mentioned, but most of the content focuses, instead, on the developmental factors and social trends; therefore, many people who have had significant impact on nursing science have been left out. This omission in no way minimizes the contributions of these persons to the development of the field.
