The Case of Simona Moya: Patient Death and Support for the Doctor

Patient deaths can have an enormous impact on residents, intersecting personal and professional well-being. Supervisors and residency programs are in a unique position to shepherd residents through this grief process and provide emotional and institutional support. Valuing and promoting the mental health of residents requires active participation from residents as well as training programs. This example of a resident’s and supervisor’s response to a patient suicide offers insight into the challenges of assessing resident well-being and referring trainees to psychiatric care.
