Abstract

As a result of the introduction of the new technique and development of the social survey in Britain, interwar sociology increasingly turned into a coherent British specialty with a vengeance. The interwar disciples of Durkheim in France turned towards their colleagues across the Channel for an alternative, modern inspiration for the discipline. Yet the reception study of British sociologists in France shows that this regained autonomy seemed unpalatable and was constantly denied by the Durkheimians. French sociologie somehow split over this contribution between ‘Ancients’ and ‘Moderns’.
