Abstract
This chapter introduces a brief history of the growth of cryogenics over the past 60 years. This includes the proposal to meet the wide demand by including all temperatures, below the freezing point of water at 0 °C, or 273 K, as the present day temperature range of cryogenics used by industry, medicine, space rockets and satellites, research institutes and other applications. The chapter also includes a set of definitions to be used in the rest of this book.
