Abstract
Children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) have diverse communication needs in dental settings. These needs vary with each child’s experience with the healthcare system and communication preferences. This chapter outlines communication strategies for CSHCN, including those with communication disorders, intellectual disability, and autism. An overview of language disorders, speech and sound disorders, disorders in social use of communication, and hearing loss is provided. Finally, the chapter covers culturally appropriate communication, triadic communication, and consent in the context of dental care for CSHCN.
