Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry

Abstract

An essential component of inpatient geriatric psychiatry is an understanding of the legal frameworks set up to preserve autonomy, facilitate essential and ethical medical care, and protect vulnerable geriatric patients from exploitation. This chapter reviews the legal issues which can arise for geriatric patients who are hospitalized for psychiatric conditions. It provides assessment strategies to help clinicians serve the best interest of their patients.
