Part of the book series: Comparative Territorial Politics ((COMPTPOL))

Abstract

This chapter sets out the broad theme of the book. It conceptualises the linguistic tensions in Catalonia and Flanders, seeing them as normative puzzles that arise from the co-existence of nationalism and liberalism. There is an emphasis on the significance of Catalonia and Flanders as key instances of fundamental debates around rights and identity. The chapter makes the case that the distinctive feature of the book is the systematic combination of normative studies and empirical research. It situates the book in the overlapping literature between contemporary political theory, nationalism studies, and territorial politics
