Abstract
Fungal infections of central nervous system (CNS) are life-threatening diseases requiring early intervention. Fungi are ubiquitous in the environment, and known or emerging strains can be responsible for the infections. For rapid and reliable identification of fungal infections of the CNS, molecular methods are popular due to drawbacks of other diagnostic approaches. In particular, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been used for identifying and quantifying of fungi. Different real-time PCR chemistries and technologies are in market. Species-specific and broad-range real-time PCR have been used successfully in clinical trials with high sensitivity. In conclusion, the most appropriate method should be chosen according to the clinical condition of patients and the facility of mycology laboratory.
