Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignancy that arises from the prickle–squamous cell layers of the epithelium. It can metastasize to regional lymph nodes and is potentially fatal. Most patients with SCC are 60 years of age or older. The main risk factors include ultraviolet light and actinic damage. Because of its variable clinical presentation, biopsy and histological examination are required for an accurate diagnosis. The main treatment modality is surgical excision, with microscopic monitoring of the margins or Mohs’ microsurgery. The treatment of choice for secondary orbital invasion is orbital exenteration. Keratoacanthoma is considered to be a variant of SCC.
