Abstract

A young Canadian Buddhist novice pays homage to the enlightened Ajahn (“teacher”) Chah in a Thai jungle monastery. Chah spent his lifetime teaching impermanence and non-attachment. Then a stoke left him completely paralyzed. The author recounts his inner turmoil as he witnesses how the disciples care for the incapacitated body of the sick man. They claim he still teaches them. Or do they keep him alive so donations to the monastery continue to flow? Excerpted from the bestselling book, What the Buddha Never Taught.

Excerpt from Tim Ward, What the Buddha Never Taught (Berkeley: Celestial Arts Publishing, 1990), 271–281.
