Abstract

My second example of organ transplant cinema is the French movie The Intruder, directed by Clair Denis and released in 2004. The black market organ is not a life-saving item, but a toxic intrusion. Organ harvesting disrupts bodily integrity, for the donor as well as for the recipient, and this intrusive violence, concealed by standard transplantation discourse, surfaces in organ transplant cinema, with its symptomatic predilection for stories about illegal organ markets and organ theft. In movies, in other words, the ontological trauma is brought to the surface as a moral flaw.
