Abstract
Geographic position and the shape of the European continent: Europe is a part of the double-continent Eurasia (Europe and Asia), but for a long time, it has been most often recognized as a continent of its own. Compared with other continents, Europe’s territory was in the long run better protected from “natural” disasters. Europe is situated in a way which offers in large parts of natural advantages with respect to climate and weather. Of special importance is Europe’s warming up by the Gulf Stream, which is designed as the “natural heating system”. In most parts, the European continent offers a favourable environment for the well-being of its people but climate change has become a threat to the future of the continent.
