Abstract

In this chapter, after discussing the work of Foucault, Hall, Barthes, Warburg, Mitchell, Kristeva and other key theorists and philosophers, a method of ‘intervisuality’ is developed, in order to find a way to analyse modern representations of terrorists in the context of the scapegoating ritual. The method itself integrates aspects of genealogy, discourse analysis, iconology, visual semiotics and anthropology, to construct a way of analyzing images that sufficiently accounts for the influences of cultural history, mythology, and other aesthetic concerns.
