Abstract

International economic and social collaboration based on functional cooperation dates from the League. The League’s experience paved the way for the establishment of ECOSOC as one of the principal organs of the UN, with several League bodies transposed into Commissions, including those on the Status of Women and Statistics. The main technical legacies flowed to the UN, WHO and the IMF. The UN’s responsibilities for the control and production of narcotic drugs stems directly from the League. The League’s influence can also be seen in links to FAO, UNESCO, OECD, the European Union and the organization of international cooperation for communications and transport. International commodity agreements, double-taxation agreements and the standardization of internationally comparable statistics were technical innovations that the League passed to its successors.
