Abstract
The introduction frames the book in terms of L2 learning theory, research, and L2 teaching practice, and argues that the relationship among the three should be understood as reciprocal praxis. This approach is especially important in gameful L2TL, which should be grounded in theory and research not only from L2TL, but from a variety of fields including games studies and game design, as well as one’s experiences as a learner, teacher, and gamer. After then offering some history and defining some fundamental concepts, the chapter presents the books main theory of gamefulness and the notions of game-enhanced, game-based, and game-informed L2TL practice.
