Abstract
The decision to prescribe psychotropic medications to patients with intellectual disability (ID) should be carefully considered because persons with ID are more vulnerable to side effects of medications, including extrapyramidal and metabolic side effects. The strategies and recommendations that follow should be tailored to each individual after a comprehensive and thorough examination of the patient and a discussion about the risks, benefits, potential side effects, and alternative treatment options with the patient and caregiver/guardian.
