Abstract
RP speakers were encouraged to be spelling-conscious when using linking /r/ between words: if there was no written ‘r’ at the end of the first word, e.g. vanilla ice, then a linking /r/ was considered ‘intrusive’. Today, unwritten linking /r/ is no longer discouraged, and learners should expect to hear it in Southern British pronunciation.
