Abstract
This chapter shows that internal security has evolved into one of the most dynamic and prioritised policy fields of the EU. The UK’s unique opt-in and opt-out arrangements with the EU in this field have enabled it to selectively participate in measures which it perceives to be in its national interest, contributing to the field’s complex differentiated integration. However, the UK has deeply shaped the AFSJ, with the UK’s involvement having benefitted both the UK and the EU, leading to Brexit potentially having a deep impact on the internal security of both parties.
