Abstract
Estimating housing requirements according to need and demand using information on demographic trends converted into household projections. Government attempts to influence local authorities to release land for housebuilding via Regional Spatial Strategies, the New Homes Bonus, strategic housing market area requirement assessments and national calculations of local housing requirements. The politics of land release in the contexts of the ‘localism’ agenda and neighbourhood planning. Local outcomes of central policies in England. Housing requirement assessment in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
