The Comparison of the Three Energy Discourses of the European Union and the Russian Federation in 2004–2014

Abstract

This chapter provides a comparison of the similarities and differences of the three discoursive approaches, that is, the integration, liberalisation, and diversification energy discourses, of the EU and the RF in the years 2004–2014. The first part compares the content and main themes of each of the EU and Russian energy discourses, including the question of the mutual perception of the two actors; it also compares the shifts in the discourses in the two periods of 2004–2009 and 2010–2014. Similarly, the second part of the chapter focuses on a comparison of the external identities and interests of the European Union and the Russian Federation in the context of the importance and influence of norms and values in each of the energy discourses.
