Abstract

The advancing prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and related events coupled with the growing number of elderly individuals has presented a conundrum. People are living longer with a higher burden of disease including a reduced quality of life and an increased healthcare cost. Fortunately, programs have been implemented to ameliorate the negative side effects of the current trends in aging and CVD. As a whole, these programs represent cardiovascular rehabilitation, a comprehensive field that is aimed at improving outcomes in those afflicted by CVD or related events. While the field retains room to expand, it is not singularly focused. Effective rehabilitation programs involve interventions such as exercise and physical activity, diet modification, pharmacotherapy, and counseling, to name a few. Given the variety of CVD states encountered, there is no one proper course of action to take. This necessitates the appropriate decision-making by the primary care physician and the stringent adherence by the patient to achieve the optimal outcome. The goal of this chapter is to explore different CVD states that can be improved via cardiac rehabilitation, the implementation of cardiac rehabilitation, and how this model can be effective and applied to practice.
