Abstract
Image-guided biopsy allows accurate and specific sampling of tumours in a safe and effective manner. The patient, reasons for biopsy and choice of approach should be discussed in a multidisciplinary team or tumour board meeting. Adequate pre-procedure work-up will include checking of blood results, appropriate consent for the procedure and performance and review of any pre-procedure imaging. Ultrasound will usually be the most useful and quickest method for performing biopsy in the majority of tumours. Other methods of guidance including CT, MRI or image fusion techniques may be needed. Complications are uncommon from image-guided biopsy, and these minimally invasive approaches offer a safe and effective method of tumour tissue sampling.
