Abstract

This paper describes a locking device based on shape memory alloys (SMA) for extrusion blow moulding machines which can be refitted to existing facilities in order to reduce energy costs. It is a simple solution for reliable and efficient locking and unlocking of extrusion blow moulds during the extrusion process. It utilises the main advantages of SMA, a functional material with the ability to return to a former shape after a deformation. The system features a condition monitoring system to maintain process stability by detecting process failure due to changeover. By integrating this feature we are able to further increase the actuator life-time which is especially beneficial for an application with high cycle loads like extrusion blow moulding. Also, we can decrease the energy consumption of extrusion blow moulding facilities significantly by reducing hydraulics operation time.
