Abstract

In this introductory chapter basic facts about the occurrence of natural sea and land-based polar ice on our planet are provided, a brief history of the development of ice mechanics as a scientific discipline is given, and the outline of the book content, with the description of the subject matter of Chaps. 2–8 is presented.
