Abstract

This book presents an extensive summary of the research on patient safety in robotic surgery, carried out in the context of the European project SAFROS, and briefly presents also the continuation of that research first addressing the autonomous execution of simple surgical tasks and currently the development of a framework for robotic autonomy in surgery. The introduction in Chap. 1 presents the problems arising from the introduction of high technology devices into established procedures, such as those of surgical practice. These problems can be addressed only by leveraging the complementary competences of the people working in the area as it was carried out during this research.
