Abstract

The AXE (Automatic Exchange Electric) switching system was the first fully automated digital switching system, and it converted speech into digital (i.e., the binary language used by computers). Ericsson developed it in 1977, and Ericsson’s competitors were still using the slower and less reliable analog systems. AXE had a modular system design, which made the system flexible and capable of evolving over time for use in different types of exchanges. New functionality could be added, and existing modules updated or replaced.
