Abstract
Male anorexia is analysed with compulsive exercise as a key element. Parallels are drawn between food and exercise, and crime and punishment as concepts to understand the man’s tortured relationship with restriction. Relationships with mum, friends and girlfriends on the man’s eating disorder are discussed, including perfectionism and social withdrawal. Recovery is debated, especially stigma’s impact on healthcare-avoidance. This is related to the idea of passing as ‘normal’ in eating disorders.
