Abstract
Having surveyed the long trajectory of the Western intellectual tradition from its origins in classical Greek philosophy through the Baconian turn and forward to modern pragmatism, we are now in a position to make some assessments. We have seen that Western modernity as a distinctive world view begins with the peculiar genius of Sir. Francis Bacon, his critique of Aristotelianism and his re-conceptualization of the aim of knowledge and science as technological power. By now the fruits of this approach are clear and abundant.
We ought not to sail to the pillars of Hercules and run many dangers for the sake of wealth, while we spend neither labour nor money for wisdom –Aristotle . Protrepticus (Aristotle. Protrepticus. Frg. 52. Jaeger. Aristotle. 59–60.)
