Abstract
Since the performance of some high-stake English tests often goes hand in hand with the future career and happiness of test takers, emotions aroused by them are enormous, which has caught much attention within the past few decades. However, due to statistical limitations, so far, few research has been done as to ranking the emotion factors based on their sensitivity to English test performance. Therefore, in this paper, a comparison study concerning the ranking of seven extensively investigated emotion factors has been conducted with gray relational analysis, a statistical method that has no requirements of both sample size and distribution. Results show that motivation-to-avoid-failure, a branch of achievement motivation, is the most sensitive factor to English test performance (comprehensive gray correlation = 0.874, n = 20) with performance-avoidance goal right following it (comprehensive gray correlation = 0.709, n = 20).
