Abstract

The 1920s and early 1930s were a period of great theoretical and practical thinking about space travel in Russia. Rocket societies flourished, and experimental small rockets were launched by people who would one day conduct the Russian space program. Important papers on space flight were published, and flights to the moon and Mars were explored in detail. Leading scientists interested in space travel at the time included Mikhail Tikhonravov, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Alexander Shargei, Sergei Korolev, and Valentin Glushko.
