Part of the book series: The New Middle Ages ((TNMA))

Abstract

The history of the municipal hospital is long and complicated. Although the rise of the municipal hospital occurred in the Middle Ages, the traditions that created the institution began long before the medieval period. While it might seem senseless to reinvent the wheel, or in this case the hospital, the overall history of the hospital is key in understanding its ultimate development. The history of the hospital is not one of only the institutional building; it is the history of the people associated with the hospital and its creation. In the conclusion, we revisit the rise of the hospital from its primitive stages to the rise of medieval hospital of Saint John in order to understand the importance of these transitions today.
