Abstract

This chapter speaks to the private practice clinical experience of working with intergenerational issues among Asian American clients with a Christian background. I will highlight how the intersection of Asian American cultural and family values with white evangelical Christian ideals might support or challenge family intergenerational relationships. Using clinical case studies, I will be exploring these Asian family values in the context of individuals and families connected to varying types of church communities. Clinical recommendations center on integrating Bowenian concepts of differentiation and autonomy/connectedness with cultural humility around Asian American values. The goal is to provide a model of therapeutic activism with this population entailing collaboration with local churches, building relationships with pastors and church leaders, and developing Asian American resources and seminars.
