Abstract

In order to be formally recognized as an association under Swiss law, the group needed to adopt written by-laws in line with legal requirements—only then could they obtain tax-free status. It was not until the second membership meeting that a draft was submitted to members for their consideration and adoption.

Source: Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Website, accessed 16 February, 2018. Robert Wood Johnson, J&J chairman from 1932 to 1963 and a member of the Company’s founding family, drafted its credo himself in 1943, just before J&J became a publicly traded company. This was long before anyone ever heard the term ‘corporate social responsibility.’ J&J’s credo is more than just a moral compass. The company believes it is a recipe for business success. The fact that J&J is one of only a handful of companies that have flourished through more than a century of change is advanced as proof of that. The values that guide the company’s decision-making are spelled out in its credo, and views this as a challenge to put the needs and well-being of the people that the company serves first.
