Abstract

Writing about the concept of Osteosynthesis, and its practice, preceded the 1958 creation of the AO. Maurice Müller had set down the first written instructions on Osteosynthesis in 1951, while at the hospital in Fribourg and following his visit to Danis. As the AO group started to take up its work, it was again Müller who created the well-known instruction sheets (Merkblätter in German), which were carefully reviewed by all AO members and regularly amended to include their commentary. They carried the title Operative Frakturbehandlung, or Internal Fixation, which would become the title of the AO’s first full textbook.
