Abstract

Even since Robert Mathys shook Maurice Müller’s hands to seal an agreement, in the Spring of 1958, he collaborated in the design of many prototypes; these were showcased to the AO membership on the organization’s kick-off day the in November 1958. Mathys, a skilled craftsman, understood that he would not be able to commercialize any of the implants and instruments until positive surgical experiences had been confirmed and that this could take up to 3–4 years.

Curia AG, located in Chur, has been the accounting firm for the AO organization ever since Peter von Rechenberg became involved. His son, Andrea von Rechenberg, is active at Curia and is still involved with AO matters to this date. His daughter, Brigitte von Rechenberg, became a veterinarian surgeon and had been involved with AO for many years.

The Synthes AG Chur founders were well aware of the practice in other countries of surgeons licensing their designs to manufacturers, having their names put on those, and receiving up to 20% of the business profits in return. The AO surgeons wanted to prevent such practice, and Müller’s donation of his designs and patents allowed them to do so.
